Each player (which the game supports a simultaneous two player mode) controls one member of their team on offense and defense and the basic objective is to move the ball up the field to reach the opposition end zone. This is done using a series of "downs", there being four downs available to move the ball ten yards forward. If a player fails to achieve that then the ball turns over to the opposition offense. The player can also score by opting to attempt to kick the ball between the opponent's goal (called a field goal and worth fewer points than a...

Mine Storm

GCE Vectrex - 1982

Developed by General Consumer Electronics, Vectrex's manufacturer, it was built into the game system. The gameplay is very similar to that of Atari's Asteroids. The player's ship starts in the middle of the field with 5 lives. Numerous mines then start popping up. The player must destroy all of the mines in order to progress to the next minefield. Missiles, tanks, UFO's, and other enemy artillery can all be found and will try to stop you. Colliding with any of these enemies, enemy fire, or the landscape will cause you to lose one of your planes. To fight back, your plane is equipped with both bombs and guns which can destroy most of the enemies you'll encounter. Your plane has a limited amount of fuel, and you'll crash if you run out. To replenish the fuel supply, you must bomb the...

Space Wars

Space Wars

GCE Vectrex - 1982

The player(s) controls a space ship in a space field with only the sun, their opponent's ship, and an occasional asteroid to contend with. The opponent's ship is equally matched to the player's, as it is their mission to destroy the opponent's ship as many times as possible. Both players have similar maneuverability, speed, defense and attack capabilities. Players may fire lasers, thrust or enter hyperspace; however, defense usage is limited and can be depleted. Both ships can be disabled and still cause damage before they are completely destroyed, although thrusting directly into the sun will...

Uncommon for Vectrex games the cartridge contains an EEPROM to save highscores, unlocked items and calibration...

Vector Vaders

Vector Vaders

GCE Vectrex - March 8, 1996

March 8, 1996 marked a day of the rebirth of Vectrex games, as programmer John Dondzila unveiled Vector Vaders, which was not only the very first homebrew game for the machine, but it also started the plethora of new games for the Vectrex as well. Aside from having vector graphics and running a bit slow (although the game does speed up as more and more invaders are shot), this is a pretty standard Space Invaders-type game for the most part.
