Adventure Quiz: Capcom World: The Adventures of Hatena

Adventure Quiz: Capcom World: The Adventures of Hatena

NEC TurboGrafx-CD - Released - June 19, 1992

Adventure Quiz is a compilation of two games previously released on the arcades, Capcom World and Hatena? no Daiboken. Both games play very similarly: the player has to roll dice in order to navigate his/her alter ego on a board with medieval/fantasy backgrounds. Depending on the result, the character advances a certain amount of squares, which lead to various quiz challenges. The player has to answer a series of questions within a time limit, choosing the right answer among the several (usually four) available ones. Two-player gameplay is also possible. Upon reaching the final square of a "world", the player has to face a "boss enemy" (usually a character from popular games by Capcom, such as Side Arms, Forgotten Worlds, etc.). The boss offers the player a choice of several available topics for the decisive quiz. "Defeating" the boss leads the player into a new worlds with its own structure, etc. The themes of the questions are varied, ranging from history and geography to Japanese popular culture and very specific themes (such as bicycles). Hatena? no Daiboken is a follow-up to Capcom World, offering a few enhancements: multiple paths through some worlds, special squares that lead to new challenges (such as a quiz with only three possible answers), etc.

NEC TurboGrafx-CD - Released - July 10, 1993

Unlike the previous entries in the series, the battle system does not have a first-person viewpoint, but rather a side view similar to that of the 2D Final Fantasy titles. The game is also a bit more lighthearted and humorous than it's predecessors, featuring elements such as villains who sing a song before doing battle with the party. Konami's Pooyan

Konami's Pooyan

Microsoft MSX - Released - 1985

In Pooyan, you play the role of a pig, protecting its piglets from wolves. The first screen takes place near the pigs' home. Mrs. Pig rides up and down in a cable car, shooting at wolves, who are riding balloons downward, towards the ground. If the wolves land safely on the ground, then they can climb a ladder, near the cable-car, and catch Mrs. Pig. But if she shoots their balloons, they splat on the ground instead. The wolves shoot acorns at the pig. But Mrs. Pig has a food based weapon too. If she gets to the top, she can get meat, to toss at the wolves and make them jump off their balloons in pursuit. Each wolf taken out this way is worth bonus points (on a doubling scheme: 400, 800 1600...) The second scene takes place at the wolves lair. Here the wolves have reinforced balloons--it takes multiple hits to make them fall. Here they float upwards toward a big rock, which they push on top of Mrs. Pig, when seven wolves are present. Additionally, an alpha wolf (wolf leader) appears and summons wolves in packs.

Quiz Caravan Cult Q

Quiz Caravan Cult Q

NEC TurboGrafx-CD - Released - May 28, 1993

Quiz Caravan: Cult Q is a trivia game with four modes. The main mode involves a quiz competition in which players can choose the topics of the questions, e.g. movies, video games, history, etc. Up to five players can participate in this mode or compete against the computer AI. The "adventure mode" is a board game in which the player-controlled character's movement is determined by a dice roll. Normal fields lead to short quiz encounters; other fields may enhance the protagonist's hit points, and the final field on each stage is a more challenging "boss battle". Time attack mode involves answering correctly as many questions as possible within the allotted time limit. Finally, versus mode has players competing against each other; every right answer advances the character on a board, while the opponent is pushed back. All modes feature characters from other games published by Hudson Soft, such as Bomberman or Tengai Makyō series.

Players select warlords to control, and rise to dominance by defeating other warlords in quiz encounters. Each attempt at conquering a province leads to a quiz posed by the defending warlord. Seiya Monogatari: Anearth Fantasy Stories

Seiya Monogatari: Anearth Fantasy Stories

NEC TurboGrafx-CD - Released - December 22, 1995

A mysterious young woman with a baby was attacked during the Holy Night. She managed to escape, but collapsed and died in front of the church in the city of Yalem. But the baby survived, grew up, and eventually became a hero on a quest to avenge his mother's murderers and save the world. Seiya Monogatari: Anearth Fantasy Stories differs from most other role-playing games in several important aspects. The player creates the main character in a unique way: when the baby lies on the snow outside of the church, several people pass by. The player can choose to press the action button, making the baby cry and attracting the attention of these people. Depending on the timing of this "baby action", the hero will be adopted by different people, which make him belong to a different character class (fighter, thief, mage, or monk), and also lead to four entirely different prologues (once the hero turns fifteen, the four stories eventually merge into one). Instead of random battles - or even regular battles with wandering enemies - the game has pre-set battles, which occur much less frequently than in traditional Japanese RPGs. Winning the battles depends less on leveling-up and more on the actual tactics used during the battle. There are no levels in the game; instead, the characters gain better statistics depending on their actions during battles (e.g., using magic will increase magic power, etc.). The battles are turn-based and are viewed from a side-scrolling perspective. The game focuses on exploration, having large and complex locations as well as plenty of items of different categories that can be found if the player explores the game world properly.

This variant features six patterns named after animals: tiger, scorpion, monkey, snake, panther, and dragon. The player can choose to display hints or reverse any amount of moves. A mode with a time limit is available as well.

Tengai Makyou: Dennou Karakuri Kakutouden

Tengai Makyou: Dennou Karakuri Kakutouden

NEC PC-FX - Released - July 28, 1995

The ancient demon Yomi is about to be revived once again, and warriors all over the land of Jipang have gathered to stop him. But only the strongest of them can fight Yomi, after he has defeated all the others - because this story is but an excuse for fights between familiar characters from Tengai Makyō universe! This fighting game uses the same system as the previously released Battle Heat: each and every move of the characters is displayed as an anime-style movie. The player presses appropriate buttons for offensive and defensive moves (also controlling the power of the move), after which an anime sequence is shown. In both versus mode (against a computer opponent and two-players mode), it is possible to play as some of the most remarkable Tengai Makyō heroes (Ziria, Manjimaru, Kabuki, and others), as well as some of the villains - like the recurrent stupid monkey Mantou.
