Cabaret Asteroids

Commodore Amiga - Released - 1991

For those of you who have not had the pleasure of Asteroids here is a description: The game is displayed in high contrast black and white, that's just black and white, there are no shades of grey in this game. Your ship is a small white triangle, in the centre of a black screen. When the game starts, asteroids, large irregular rock shapes, drift gently into view from the outer edges of the screen. Your ship can rotate in either direction, and fire, so this is what you must do, in order to prevent your ship from being destroyed. As your shots hit the asteroids they break into smaller and smaller fragments, and the directions and speeds imparted to them seem to be highly convincing. Cabaret Asteroids is a near perfect conversion of Asteroids for the Amiga. Its not in technicolor, there is no music, and the sounds are simple but effective. The playability of the original has not been surpassed though. I really can't fault the Cabaret Asteroids conversion, you can play by keyboard or joystick and it feels just like 1980, but without Sting and the guys in the background.

The hidden game only works on versions of LOTUS 1 where the game information screen is shown after pressing fire to start it. It was also published as a standalone game on the Coverdisk #4 of Amiga Action Magazine issue 18 (Mar 1991).

Scramble

Commodore Amiga - Released - 1995

Released exclusively for Amiga Action magazine and based on the 1981 Konami Coin-op, Scramble is actually a very old game. It dates back to an Arcade cabinet by Konami from 1981. There are countless clones for many different computer systems. The gameplay always follows this basic formula: You fly a plane or a space ship through caves or mountainous terrain, destroying missiles, tanks, UFOs and other enemies along your path. To refill your tank, you must bomb fuel depots which appear on the ground.

Sensible Massacre

Sensible Massacre

Commodore Amiga - Released - 1994

Putting the basic visual style from Sensible Soccer to a new use, Sensible Massacre sets you as an England goalkeeper faced with hordes of Dutch strikers running towards you (as a patriotic dig after the Dutch football team prevented the English one from qualifying for the 1994 World Cup). You are armed with an infinite supply of bombs, and must use these to kill the guys before they can reach the goal-line. They are aimed by using a crosshair controlled by the mouse, and fired with the left button. It's essentially Missile Command, so aiming the bombs slightly in front of where the players are at that moment, so as to allow for the time the bomb takes to explode and the distance the strikers can travel in that time. Bombs leave craters in the pitch, although these don't appear to affect the motion of the players, and is purely cosmetic. You can choose how long the game lasts, how fast the opposition is, and the color of the pitch. After the game, you are told how many players are 'home' (killed by you) and how many are 'away' (reached the goal-line successfully); the observant among you will notice the Cannon Fodder overlap.

Sensible Massacre 2

Commodore Amiga - Released - 1995

This game is a sequel to Sensible Massacre (England v Holland) also created by James Hall and is another spoof of Sensible Soccer. It was featured on Amiga Action 70, disk 3. You can choose how long the game lasts, how fast the opposition is, and the color of the pitch. After the game, you are told how many players are 'home' (killed by you) and how many are 'away' (reached the goal-line successfully).

Sensible World of Moon Soccer

Commodore Amiga - Released - 1994

An amusing version of the highly popular Sensible Soccer game with 3000 real players to choose from and real championships to play in but this time with some difficult lunar playing fields. This version was featured on Amiga Action 65, disk 2.

Shoot Pontoon

Shoot Pontoon

Commodore Amiga - Released - 1992

A single player casino game from Bryan Black. Shoot Pontoon is simply a more money oriented version of everyone's fave card game Pontoon, Blackjack or 21. You start off with one card each and must bet based on this card. The banker will now deal you another card. From here you can now stick (if you have more than 16), twist (which costs you nothing but the banker will know your card) or buy by adding to the pot to buy another card, but the bet remains the same. If you have 14 or less with 2 cards you can also burn to get 2 new cards. If you win against the banker you will take your bets back from the pot as well as the same amount from the banker. If the banker runs out of money you have won, but the reverse is also true. Published in The Assassins releases as well as 3138 Rob's Hot Games #2, 17 Bit Software compilations and was a coverdisk for Amiga Action #60 in August 1994.

Sound the Space Cadet

Commodore Amiga - Released - 1994

SOUND THE SPACE CADET ** was included on the cover disk of Amiga Action Issue #65. A 2D platformer, collector game. A precursor to Ace The Space-Case. I started laughing the first time I saw the attack animation of the player sprite: It is literally impossible to shoot something that is right in front of you because shots fly out at an 45-degree angle. You have bounce shots off the ceiling, and even then, enemies are only affected by the explosion frame of the animation. Unexploded projectiles which you have just thrown do not hurt them. You will constantly spam the attack button, yet only a fraction of your shots will count. It is one of the most ineffective, frustrating-to-use weapons I have ever seen in a game, and I love it!

Super Twintris

Super Twintris

Commodore Amiga - Released - 1991

Super Twintris is a remake of Twintris and is excellent Tetris clone. It has six modes of gameplay for one or two players who progress through the difficulty levels. The player does not get bored with doing all the same all the time. Add to this tournament and cup modes and you get ultimate tetris which you can only dream about! Handling is smooth, graphics are OK, music is awesome. Nothing more, nothing less.
