Overview

Gameplay is divided into two parts. In the first part, Richard the Lionheart is building his forces for the Third Crusade. His men are scattered throughout the forest of medieval England, and Prince John's army is tracking Richard down. Lettered squares on the screen represent Richard's men, while green areas represent thick forests. King John's men will constantly move towards the player, and will burn down any forest or men they encounter. The goal is to collect at least 450 men and escape out the bottom right of the screen. King John's men always start in the bottom right of the screen, and will reappear there after burning down 10 forest squares. If his men catch Richard, it's game over. In the second part, the player explores the Holy Lands from a top-down perspective. The player has limited food and strength which are depleted with movement. The player can visit different sites marked on the map, which can increase the player's strength or food, or can offer puzzles which, if solved correctly, will strengthen Richard's party. The player also engages in combat with roving bands, and the party with the highest strength will win. Once the player is strong enough, they must attack Saladin's fortress, where they need a high power level to defeat the enemy. The player can run from most combats, but not the final battle. It's game over if strength falls to 0.
