Linux (or GNU/Linux) is a name that broadly denotes a family of free and open-source software operating systems (OS) built around the Linux kernel. Typically, Linux is packaged in a form known as a Linux distribution (or "distro" for short) for both desktop and server use. The defining component of a Linux distribution is the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released on September 17, 1991, by Linus Torvalds. While Linux distributions use the word "Linux" in their name, the Free Software Foundation uses the name GNU/Linux to refer to the operating system family, as well as specific distributions, to emphasize that most Linux distributions are not just the Linux kernel, and that they have in common not only the kernel, but also numerous utilities and libraries, a large proportion of which are from the GNU project. This has led to some controversy in regards to the naming of Linux operating systems.

Historically, Linux gaming has started from the already present Unix-based gaming scene. Although Windows-based gaming began to dominate the scene as time went on, various programs, emulators, and wrappers such as Wine have been used to play those games on Linux operating systems, as well as many open-source games being created similar to Linux. In September of 2013, developer and distributor Valve Corporation announced SteamOS, a Linux distribution designed specifically for for their digital storefront Steam and for gaming. In August 22, 2018, they then announced their fork of Wine called Proton, allowing for better compatibility with modern games, including DirectX 11 support, increasing the number of available games on Linux. On February 25, 2022, Valve then released the Steam Deck, a handheld gaming device running SteamOS.

Other gaming-focused distributions include Batocera, a distribution designed for the emulation for the purposes of retro gaming, and Bazzite, a distribution based on the Fedora gaming system.
