Lemmings is divided into a number of levels, grouped into four difficulty levels. Each level comprises both destructible landscape elements such as rocks, indestructible sections such as steel plates, and numerous obstacles including chasms, high walls, large drops, pools of water or lava, and booby traps. Each level also includes one or more entrance points and one or more exits. The goal is to guide a certain percentage of the green-haired, blue-shirted lemmings from the entrance to the exit by clearing or creating a safe passage through the landscape for the lemmings to use.

Thus, you must go in your spaceship to destroy them all. The game is a side-scrolling R-Type-influenced shoot 'em up consisting of six visually-diverse levels. Waves of enemies come towards you to be shot, and reveal tokens, which when shot at will cycle through several available weapons. These include lasers, cannons, improved ship power and a shield.

The levels feature snowy landscapes, snowmen, festive lights, Christmas songs as background music and the Lemmings dressed in Santa hats and coats.

Xmas Lemmings (1992)

The 1992 edition of Xmas Lemmings is another free demo intended to promote Lemmings and Oh No! More Lemmings. It includes four entirely new Christmas-themed levels, in the same style as the 1991 demo: Jingle Bells and other Christmas songs as background music and the Lemmings moving through snowscapes dressed in Santa outfits. The holiday levels from the earlier demo were comparatively easy, but this one also includes some brain teasers comparable to levels from the main games' higher difficulties.
