First game of the series, Creatures is a biological simulation where you start with six eggs of Norns, which you need to raise, give them knowledge about the world they live in, teach them how to speak, how to use toys, an elevator, how to eat etc. They will eventually grow older, reproduce themselves and die. The game uses its own genetics system, as well as biochemical and neurological calculations to determine the evolution of Norns and the way their DNA would develop in their descendants.

Creatures 2 is the sequel to Creatures. In Creatures 2 the player is again put in charge of caring for a group of artificial lifeforms called Norns. The player is responsible for making sure the Norns don't starve by providing them with food and making sure they stay healthy. Players must also make sure that the Norns don't die out by ensuring that the creatures breed.

Norns live for around seven hours, and have their own bloodstream, brains, and even a genetic structure called Creatures Digital DNA. With your help the Norns can thrive. You can protect them, teach them, breed them and even construct vast automated machines that help you in your quest.

Joined by Maria, who strongly resembles her, he searches for her and discovers the truth about her death. Additional material in re-releases and ports included Born from a Wish, a sub-scenario which focuses on Maria before she and James meet.
