4 Square

Released in June 1971 by Gottlieb, 4 Square is a single-player electro-mechanical pinball machine designed by Ed Krynski. The table has a wide-open, highly symmetrical playfield layout that is complemened by the geometry-inspired artwork of Gordon Morison.

At the heart of the gameplay is a progressive sequencing rule centered around the numbers 1 through 4. The open playfield includes two sets of targets and three sets of rollovers, each corresponding to an indicator light valued from 1 to 4. To maximize scores and unlock "Specials," players must successfully complete this numerical sequence four separate times. Once the grid is fully lit, four dedicated standup targets activate, granting the player free games and an opportunity to rack up high scores.

4 Square was one of the very last machines built with classic, smaller 2-inch flippers before larger flippers became the industry standard. The table's hardware configuration is lean and traditional, boasting two flippers, three pop bumpers arranged in a tight central triangle, two slingshots, and eight standup targets. The machine enjoyed a production run of 2,200 units.
