Lei Dian II: Thunderbolt Fighting Plane

Lei Dian II: Thunderbolt Fighting Plane is an unlicensed shooter developed and published by Gamtec. The game was released around the same time as the Sega Genesis game Thunderbolt II, also by Gamtec, and the two games use the same box artwork. The back of the Famicom box even has screenshots from the Genesis game.

Despite sharing the same name and box art, and both being vertical shmups, the Famicom and Genesis versions are completely different games. Where as the Genesis game is largely influenced by other Genesis shmups like Dangerous Seed and Verytex, the Famicom game is a clunky clone of Hudson's Star Soldier series.

Despite being titled Lei Dian II, or Thunderbolt II, there never was a part 1. The name, Lei Dian II, was likely chosen because of its similarities to Raiden II, which was a popular shmup at the time of its release.

Some sources state that the Famicom version was released in 1993, and the Genesis version followed in 1995. However most sources give the release date as 1995 for both games, and this would make sense since the Famicom box art uses Genesis screenshots.

In 2022 PIKO rereleased both Lie Dian II games in a compilation for the Switch.
