Overview

Haunted House is a side-scrolling horror-themed arcade game for the Apple II. The Mad Scientist is waiting for you in his laboratory, which is infested by a number of horror-themed creatures. The Scientist sits atop his mini 23XUV-model nuclear reactor, and will sent to whole laboratory sky high if you manage to reach him. The player controls a large rabbit with a jetpack which can move in all directions. The rabbit possesses a gun which can shoot left or right, and is limited to 100 shots in total. The player must navigate a maze infested with bats and jack-o-lanterns. On each level, the player must collect a skeleton key, which allows them to unlock doors and proceed further to the right. There are multiple doors on each level, some of which contain additional ammo, but others which contain a booby trap that destroy the player and takes a life. The player starts with 5 lives, and if all are lost, it's game over. The player loses a life if they are hit by a monster. Each level is infested additionally with 1 extra horror-themed creature, and they become progressively more difficult with each additional level. On the first level, the player encounters Frankenstein, whom requires multiple hits to kill. On level 2, Dracula is encountered, who fires back at the player. Progressively, the play encounters: Frankenstein, Dracula, a mummy, a ghost, The Blob, The Invisible Man, a zombie, a witch, and finally the Mad Scientist himself.
