Overview
Johnny Mnemonic is a licensed pinball machine released by Williams in August 1995. Based on the 1995 film of the same name, itself an adaptation of William Gibson's cyberpunk short story, the plot is set in a dystopian future racked by a tech-induced plague, awash with conspiracies, and dominated by megacorporations and organized crime.
Drawing inspiration from Gibson's short story, designer George Gomez also incorporated film elements, such as the magnetic glove that captures balls and must be steered over to the Matrix in order to drop the ball and get a reward. The pinball follows the plot of the movie fairly well; you must accomplish various tasks, such as finding a cure for NAS, getting rid of the Yakuza, and getting various rewards from the Matrix. An interactive Dot Matrix Display features a "Pac-Man-like" creature that players control with the flipper buttons, blending video game elements into the pinball experience.
Released in tandem with the movie, the game's sales suffered due to the film's poor box office performance, and only 2,756 units were ever produced. Over time, however, it has been celebrated as an underrated gem in the pinball community.
