Overview

Super Mario 64 gets a fresh coat of paint with an unofficial port to PC, featuring native 4K resolution and widescreen display support, powered by DirectX 12. Dropped online without advanced notice in April 2020, a YouTube channel called 'Unreal' uploaded gameplay of the nearly 25-year-old classic platformer showcasing raytracing via ReShade, screen-space reflections, ambient obscurance, and advanced depth of field effects. The sharper graphics left gamers stunned. It also led to speculation that its release was the result of the decompiled Super Mario 64 source code leaked a year earlier. Nintendo quickly threatened legal action against the major media platforms unless they removed any videos or posts discussing the game's PC port, but the cat was already out of the bag. In the long run, the new code opens the doors to modders and programmers looking to add new and larger levels to Mario's adventure, with more enemies and puzzles than ever thought possible.
