Overview

Virtual Kyōtei: Nekkyō Pennant Race is a simulation of kyōtei boat racing, a specific kind of boat racing popular in Japan for betting, in which small hydroplane craft are raced on an oval course in a man-made lake. It is the first entry in a series, a follow-up to the earlier Super Kyōtei games produced by Nichibutsu for the Super Famicom, and also features an official license from the Japan Motor Boat Racing Association. There are two main game modes: Kyōtei Eiyū Retsuden ("Boat Racing Hero Chronicle") is the main career mode where the player creates a racer and must increase their rank to become a champion and win the seven SG-class races; and the Time Trial mode where the player can practice the course either solo or with a full field and save their best times. There is also a kyōtei library mode where the player can read about the basics and specific strategies involved in the sport, and a watch mode where the player can set up a field of any six racers and watch a simulated race.
