Overview
Silver Slugger is a classic, baseball-themed solid-state pinball machine released by Gottlieb / Premier Technology in February 1990. Designed by John Trudeau, it was the very first entry in Gottlieb’s experimental "Street Level" line of games. This initiative sought to combat rising production and purchasing costs by building simpler, single-level playfields with absolutely no ramps. Built on the reliable Gottlieb System 3 hardware platform, the machine combined a retro, flat-table feel reminiscent of late-1970s pins with modern solid-state electronics and an aesthetic set in a stylized, baseball landscape.
Despite lacking multi-tiered ramps, the playfield delivers fast-paced, satisfying action. The table features a classic two-flipper design, three pop bumpers, a four-bank of drop targets, and a mechanical vari-target that rewards hard shots with higher point values. Its standout physical features are three spinning targets, including a central orbit spinner that players can rip cleanly to advance baseball runners and score home runs. There is also a left outlane kickback to save draining balls and a dual-mode two-ball and three-ball multiball system triggered through the game's mystery kick-out saucers.
Visually and functionally, the machine is optimized for competitive multiplayer action, allowing up to four players to participate simultaneously. It utilizes a dual-game scoring presentation across its backbox displays: two blue alphanumeric screens track individual pinball scores and player instructions, while four distinct red LED segments actively keep score of "runs" earned during the baseball simulation. A built-in backbox light animation even illustrates miniature baseball players running across the bases. Gottlieb manufactured exactly 2,100 units of Silver Slugger, making it the most produced and best-known machine of their short-lived Street Level series before the company returned to traditional ramp designs.
