Overview
Released in November 1980, Bally's Frontier is a solid-state classic that transports players to the North American wilderness with its iconic survival theme. Designed by George Christian, the game is best known for its atmospheric sound package, featuring a distinct cricket chirping background noise that increases in frequency as the bonus builds, creating a sense of mounting tension.
The playfield layout is centered around a challenging set of inline drop targets and three distinct "beast" banks (Wolf, Bear, and Cougar) that players must complete to advance their multipliers. Lighting all the animals advances the "Frontier Bonus" to 60,000 and the "Predator Bonus" to 45,000 and lights "Special".
With its beautiful wilderness artwork and high-risk, high-reward scoring strategy, Frontier is highly regarded by collectors for its "old-school" difficulty and satisfying mechanical feedback. A total of 1,850 units were produced.
