Heat Wave

Overview

Heat Wave, released by Williams Electronic Games, Inc. in July 1964, is a classic electro-mechanical (EM) game renowned for its unique backbox animation and innovative target design. Designed by Steve Kordek with artwork by Roy Parker, only 1,800 units were produced.

The standout feature is a thermometer in the backglass that "rises" as you hit specific targets. Raising the thermometer increases the value of the center drop target from 100 up to 500 points. Reaching the maximum temperature level triggers a "Special" award and is considered the ultimate goal of the game.

The machine famously makes an appearance in John Carpenter's 1982 horror film, The Thing.
