Buckaroo

Overview

Buckaroo is a single-player electro-mechanical pinball machine released by D. Gottlieb & Co. in June 1965. Designed by Wayne Neyens with cartoonish Wild West artwork by Roy Parker, it stands as one of the definitive "wedgehead" cabinet games of the 1960s.

The most famous element of Buckaroo is its interactive backglass. Every time the 100-point score reel advances, a mechanical bucking bronco horse kicks a cowboy named "Skeeter" in the rear.

Buckaroo holds a prominent spot in rock-and-roll history. It was one of the central pinball machines featured in the 1975 film adaptation of The Who's rock opera Tommy. In the movie, the character of the "Pinball Wizard" (played by Elton John) is seen playing a modified version of a Buckaroo machine before being defeated by Tommy.

Buckaroo enjoyed a production run of 2,600 units. It's add-a-ball variant was called "Cow Poke", which had a production run of 1,256 units.
