Overview
Viva la emoción! Celebrate football fever with fast kicks, wild passes and a tribute to the legendary 1986 World Cup.
Mexico ’86 is themed around the 1986 World Cup and features catchy musical jingles and a vibrant playfield which combines sporting and mesoamerican motifs. This was the final Zaccaria model featuring artwork by Lorenzo Rimondini. Sharp-eyed players may also spot what looks like a rather “legally-distinct” representation of Pique, the tournament mascot, on the apron artwork.
It followed the more commercially successful Soccer Kings table but struggled to reach the same level of popularity. Because it was produced toward the end of Zaccaria's operations, the production run was small, with estimates as low as 500 units.
The basic idea is to score goals in the mini playfield or “Power Play” zone. You get in there by making the cross-shot to the kicker in the top right hand corner. Once you’re inside, knock down all the defenders and shoot the bullseye to score a GOOOOOOOAAAAAAAL!!! You only have a few seconds to do this so you need to build up a bit of a time bonus first by hitting the yellow drop targets to advance the Time Special.
There aren’t very many shots to make in Mexico ’86 and the rules aren't deep enough to keep the real experts interested but it is a fun table, partly because of how much of a challenge it is to keep the ball in play. The ball ends up moving pretty fast around the lower playfield so things can get rather lively. Much like in football it’s important to control the ball and manage the pace of the game to succeed. If you’re struggling, switch to arcade mode to slow things down a little and don’t be afraid to start nudging to keep the ball from getting kicked into touch by that outlane bumper.
This table was recreated by Magic Pixel and released as DLC for Zaccaria Pinball on Steam on 16 June, 2016.
