Overview
Battleship Bismarck is a strategy game recreating the May 1941 naval operation Exercise Rhine. The narrative follows the German task force, centered on the Bismarck and the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen, as they attempt to break into the North Atlantic to raid Allied commercial shipping. The scenario encompasses the vast oceanic region between Norway and France, focusing on the evasion of British naval pursuit.
The simulation utilizes two distinct layers. On the strategic map, navigation occurs across a grid where each square represents 70 miles and turns represent four-hour intervals. Success depends on managing fuel consumption, monitoring shifting weather zones, and utilizing reconnaissance from submarines and aircraft to locate the enemy.
Tactical combat transitions to a specialized grid for surface engagements involving up to 12 vessels. Command involves manual targeting of gun batteries and torpedo tubes. The interface tracks damage to specific ship subdivisions; midship hits directly reduce a vessel's maximum speed. Information is conveyed through text logs and map ID symbols, maintaining a "fog of war" where enemy positions are only revealed through radar or visual detection.
