Overview
Gottlieb's Jet Spin is a classic four-player electro-mechanical game released in August 1977. It holds historical significance as one of the very last electro-mechanical machines manufactured by D. Gottlieb & Co. before the industry transitioned into solid-state electronic games shortly after. With a production run of 4,761 units, Jet Spin stands out as a high-speed multiplayer pinball setup that captures the peak of analog arcade engineering. It was accompanied by a two-player counterpart variant named Super Spin.
The artwork on the cabinet and backglass captures the pulp science-fiction and fantasy trends of the late 1970s. Designed with a comic-book aesthetic, the game showcases characters riding futuristic surfboards across the sky and a swirling vortex pattern built directly into the glass.
The game features an asymmetric playfield layout that distinguishes it from more common, symmetrical cabinet designs of the era. Instead of standard drop targets, the playfield relies on an action-packed array of interactive components, including a prominent central roto-target, a vari-target, and pop bumpers. This design provides satisfying angles and specialized skill shots that reward practiced players. The uneven distribution of elements shifts the traditional geometric balance of the ball paths, creating dynamic ball movement that challenges the physics intuition of players.
Mechanically, the centerpiece of the game is Gottlieb’s interactive roto-target, which spins to change point values and advances end-of-ball bonuses. Players can aim for the narrow left bullseye target to trigger special scoring or utilize the center kickout hole to claim the matching roto-target values. Pop bumpers award 1,000 points upon impact, while landing the ball in the right-side U-saucer multiplies the active center target values. End-of-ball scoring can max out at a base bonus of 15,000 points without an explicit multiplier mechanic.
