Overview
Namco × Capcom is a crossover tactical role-playing game that unites characters and settings from a wide range of Namco and Capcom franchises. Set in the year 20XX, the story begins as mysterious space-time distortions known as Yurigi appear across the world. These rifts disrupt reality itself, linking Earth to alternate dimensions populated by heroes and villains from numerous game universes. To investigate the anomalies, the Shinra organization, an agency dedicated to preserving dimensional stability—dispatches two of its operatives, Reiji Arisu and Shaomu, who soon find themselves drawn into a conflict far greater than a mere scientific phenomenon.
The narrative unfolds as Reiji and Shaomu travel through worlds connected by the Yurigi. As the distortions intensify, familiar characters begin appearing outside their respective realms, leading to chaotic confrontations and unexpected alliances. Over time, the duo uncovers a plot involving factions that seek to exploit the Yurigi for their own ends, threatening not only Earth but the stability of every intertwined universe.
Gameplay follows the structure of a traditional strategy RPG, placing squads of player-controlled units on isometric battlefields against enemy forces. However, combat distinguishes itself through its hybrid system: when a unit initiates an attack, the perspective shifts to a 2D side-view reminiscent of classic fighting games. In this mode, players execute menu-selected techniques and timed button inputs to create combos, juggle enemies, and maximize damage. Each character possesses a unique set of special moves, often highlighted by hand-drawn cut-ins that emphasize their signature animations and abilities. Cooperative attacks, support skills, and cross-franchise pairings deepen the tactical options, mixing SRPG structure with the fast-paced feel of arcade action.
