Overview
Explosive Breaker (also known in Japan as Bakuretsu Breaker) is a vertically scrolling space-themed shoot 'em up (shmup) developed and published by Kaneko. Released in late 1992 across international arcades, it ran on the Kaneko 16-bit hardware platform and remains a unique title of its era because it never received any official home console ports.
Players can choose from unique pilots/ships (including characters like Jean, Nigel, Steel, Mai, Mifune, and Hanse), spanning distinct species such as humans and even a lizard.
Each pilot features specific weapon spreads, auto-fire capabilities, and custom smart bombs. The special attacks vary wildly in balance—ranging from lightning storms to a massive ram wielding a sword that wipes the screen.
While fighting through traditional asteroid fields and massive starships, players oddly face off against conventional military assets like fighter jets and attack helicopters in the depths of outer space.
