Overview
BackGuiner: Yomigaeru Yūsha-tachi - Kakusei-hen "Guiner Tensei" is a turn-based mech strategy game and the first part in an planned episodic trilogy. The game is set in the near-future Tokyo of 2008, and strange monsters of unknown origin have been appearing as of late. The Tokyo Metropolitan Police have created a special force to fight these monsters, a team who pilot large mech suits called "Shells". One day, high school students Shin and Natsumi find themselves caught up in a battle between the police and the monsters, and when Shin boards an abandoned Shell to protect Natsumi, it turns out he's a natural pilot and is quickly recruited to join the team.
The game plays as a standard isometric turn-based tactical strategy game, with the player controlling individual units and issuing commands such as to move, attack, and defend. A key mechanic is "Synchro", which determines the compatibility between a Shell and its pilot; the higher this is, the more effective the unit, and it is raised using certain techniques but can be lowered when taking damage. Characters will level up as they fight, and between missions it is possible to adjust the team's equipment loadout. Each chapter includes simple adventure parts that drive the story, with Shin speaking to the other pilots and characters in visual novel-style sequences.
