Overview
Beat the Champ is a classic sports arcade game released by Konami in October 1996. Built on the Konami GV System hardware (which utilized a Sony PlayStation-based CPU), the cabinet is famous for supporting up to 4 players simultaneously using trackball controllers rather than traditional joysticks.
Unlike standard fighting games of the "Champ" era (like Karate Champ), Beat the Champ is a competitive multi-event sports compilation. Players use the trackball to control power, angle, and speed across a variety of athletic events:
Football: Kicking field goals from increasing distances and throwing accurate passes at moving targets.
Basketball: Aiming and shooting standard basketball hoops against the clock.
Golf: Driving the ball for maximum distance and chipping onto the pin.
Baseball: Timing trackball swings to hit home runs.
Bowling: Controlling the spin and speed of the ball to knock down pins.
