Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn is the first Gundam game to exclusively tell the story of the hunt for Laplace's Box. In Unicorn Mode the story is told from the perspectives of Banagher Links, Riddhe Marcenas, and Marida Cruz. Each is playable for major combat operations they are involved in, while the space between combat is told as narrated cutscenes. In battle each mobile suit has access to a melee attack, a primary ranged attack, and additional ranged weapons based on its design. All ranged weapons have limited ammo that can not be replenished, as well as an alternate fire mode. Boosting and dashing can be used to avoid fire or clear distance between targets, but depletes a fuel gauge. Bringing an enemy mobile suit to a disabled state with weak attacks allows the player's MS to cannibalize it for armor and fuel replenishment. Completing missions rewards UC points that are used to upgrade the pilots, MS, and weapons used in Unicorn Mode, as well as purchase additional MS and generic pilots from the Laboratory. These purchased units can be used to build squads for Custom Cast Mode, where the player must score kills in timed combat arenas to clear stages. Generic pilots used for this mode can all be renamed.
