Overview

Crystal Story is an RPG developed by Lanstrash and published on Newgrounds. It has you control a band of warriors as they brave a dungeon full of monsters in search of an evil witch who stole a magic crystal from their kingdom. All was well in the kingdom until one day, when an evil witch named Rita and her army of monsters raided the king's castle, stole a magic crystal known as the Focus Crystal, and retreated into a deep, dark cave with it. A bounty was placed on Rita for 100,000 gold, so a local guard named Hiro decides to enlist a group of wannabe heroes who call themselves Mercenaries, Inc. to help defeat her. He offers them double the reward if they do all the work of slaying the witch and let Hiro take the credit. Never ones to pass up a chance for big money, the heroes accept the offer and set out to brave the cave. Crystal Story plays similarly to a traditional RPG, containing several different features. The main feature is the Evil Cave, a dungeon full of procedurally generated floors where you can go looking for treasure to loot and monsters to battle. If you run into a monster in the dungeon's overworld, a battle is initiated; all battles are turn-based, and the goal is to defeat all enemies using your characters' attacks and spells before the enemies defeat your entire party. After winning a battle, you gain XP for your characters, as well as gold, equipment, and possibly other items. Every once in a while, you may encounter a boss on a specific floor; bosses are much harder to defeat than their normal counterparts but give much greater rewards, and some of them also unlock new features in the game. Once you're done exploring the dungeon, you can return to the town and access a few different features. The Tavern allows you to accept quests and receive awards for completing said quests; it also offers rewards for defeating bosses, and houses a pet Slime that you can feed with various food items found in the dungeon in order to get it to give you rewards. The Inn lets you rest in order to either restore your party's health mana points or reset their AP (action points, earned by leveling up and used to unlock new skills); resting to restore health and mana points is free, but resting to reset AP costs gold. The Shop lets you buy, sell, and upgrade equipment. Crystal Story also contains a minigame called Zombie Defense, which features match-3 gameplay and requires you to make matches on a board to ward off a zombie invasion; winning a round of Zombie Defense rewards you with a random piece of equipment.
