Overview
Top Gun: The Second Mission puts the player in the cockpit of an F-14 Tomcat for a high-speed engagement over open seas. Enemy fighters and bombers threaten the fleet below; the pilot must intercept them and survive through successive waves to complete the mission.
The player views the action from a first-person cockpit perspective, with the flight instruments visible at the bottom of the screen and enemy aircraft appearing in the skies ahead. The left control pad maneuvers the fighter—tilting left or right to line up the targeting reticle—while the right-hand buttons handle weapons and speed adjustment.
A central crosshair represents the Tomcat’s gunsight. When enemy planes enter its path, pressing Fire launches missiles or machine-gun bursts. Successful hits register as explosions across the horizon, while missed shots allow enemies to advance and reduce the player’s remaining lives. The E-10 counter displays remaining enemies in the current wave; clearing them advances to the next mission stage.
The background shows sea and sky rendered in blue tones, simulating altitude and horizon depth unusual for LCD displays of the time.
