In 1993, Sega struck a deal with Capcom to produce an exclusive port of Street Fighter II for the Mega Drive. The original 16 Megabit version, titled the Champion Edition, was possibly outsourced to ISCO and Opera House (both were regularly contracted to port Data East games), who were responsible for the Two Crude Dudes and Captain America and the Avengers ports to the Mega Drive. This version was slated to be released in June, but was canceled at the last minute when the game was nearing completion by Capcom themselves after being disappointed with the results of the port. Capcom, who up until this point never personally developed a Mega Drive game before, quickly gathered up a team to create the 24 Megabit Special Champion Edition, which was released in September of that same year.
