Overview
"Wave Race 64" is a 1996 racing video game developed and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo 64. It is the second entry in the "Wave Race" series, following the 1992 Game Boy game "Wave Race". Gameplay involves racing a personal watercraft across a variety of courses while manoeuvring around buoys. The game also includes a multiplayer mode in which two players can compete on a selected course. It supports the Controller Pak, which allows saved data to be transferred between game cartridges. The game is presented in a letterboxed 14:9 aspect ratio.
The game was initially conceived as "F-Zero on water" and was intended to feature high-speed transforming boats. These were later replaced by personal watercraft after producer Shigeru Miyamoto concluded that the original concept would not be sufficiently distinct from other games on competing systems. "Wave Race 64" received positive reviews from critics, particularly for its controls and dynamic water environments, and has subsequently been included in lists of highly regarded video games. The game also served as an early showcase for the Nintendo 64's 3D graphical capabilities following Nintendo's earlier 2D-focused titles for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. It was re-released for the Wii and Wii U through the Virtual Console in 2007 and 2016, respectively, and was added to the Nintendo Classics service in 2022. A sequel, "Wave Race: Blue Storm", was released for the GameCube in 2001.
