Overview
Vanguard is a scrolling shooter in which the player pilots an advanced spacecraft into an asteroid stronghold occupied by Gond, an alien creature responsible for attacks against nearby space colonies. The objective is to survive the tunnels leading through the Mountain, Rainbow, Styx, Stripe, and Bleak zones before reaching the City of Mystery and destroying Gond.
The spacecraft can move in eight directions while the surrounding tunnel scrolls horizontally, vertically, or diagonally, depending on the current zone. Four directional weapons allow the player to fire forward, backward, upward, or downward independently of the ship’s movement. Each area introduces different enemies, attack patterns, and cave formations, and contact with an enemy, projectile, or tunnel wall destroys the ship.
