Overview

Organ Trail is a take on the classic game The Oregon Trail, replacing the travels of the American pioneers with a zombie survival theme where a group of people needs to take an armored vehicle across 2,000 miles, fleeing from the ruins of Washington D.C. that has been overrun and will soon be wiped with a nuke. The game maintains the Apple II-style visual design and uses text prompts for choices. At the start of the game the player chooses to be a cop, a clerk or a lawyer (each with their own perks) and takes along four party members that can also be named. Travelling along the road consists of different encounters as the group needs to scavenge for gas, food, medical kits, ammunition, spare parts and money. There are bandits that can be recruited or will steal supplies, encounters with zombies, infections that affect group members, and more. Different cities can be visited along the way. On the main travel screen that consists of the car driving shown from a 2D side-scrolling perspective, various statistics are shown such as the date, zombie activity, health, fuel and food supplies. Various options are available, such as changing the pace and food rations, handing out medkits, trading, scavenging for food, stopping to rest, or killing a party member. When scavenging for food, the game turns into an overhead perspective where a character can be guided with the arrows keys to move around and the space bar to shoot zombies. This consumes ammunition, but at the same time food appears that can be collected. The game includes other types of mini games for different types of encounters as well.
