X2222

Overview

X2222 is an unreleased coin-operated arcade space shooter developed by Oriental Soft. Though initially planned for a year 2000 release, development ceased around 1999. It is a vertical top-down shooter in which the ship can acquire multiple weapons, with the primary weapons being swappable.

The hardware was described as very similar to another Oriental Soft title, G-Stream.

Trivia:

An early prototype was resurrected by the MAME development team around 2014, when the lead developer, Se Yong Jang, contacted them and requested they emulate it in MAME. A major hurdle was that instead of using 8bpp indexed graphics and a palette, it stored raw 16bpp RGB data. This was not compatible with MAME at the time.

Thanks to the wizardry of David Haywood, the game was eventually emulated. Unfortunately, the sound ROM and later levels of the game are now lost.
