Icewar: The Battle of the Lake is a 1 - 4 player strategy war game for the Apple II released as shareware. Gameplay allows 1 - 4 combatants to battle to take control of a lake. Computer opponents make up the human slots left open. The goal is to expand an ice raft to control the enemy's territory. Players control ice machines, artillery, army, miners, and raiders. The player's currency is ice, which can be used to increase the size of the player's territory, or to purchase new units. Units can only be built on controlled ice. Ice machines send out a large circular raft of ice every turn, greatly expanding the controlled territory, but these units are immobile. Artillery are also immobile, but they can instantly kill a large swath of enemies from a distance. Miners harvest surrounding ice each turn, which can be used to create new units. Army and raider units can be utilized to directly combat enemy units. In combat, army units move to a smaller screen, where they fight their enemy by giving off a raft of ice, with the goal to step onto the enemy's square to destroy them At the beginning of each round, the player can invest ice to ensure they get priority going first. At the end of each round, a tally of player's losses for that turn is displayed.
