Overview
Dragon Ball Z: Final Bout is an unlicensed fighting game for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, published by DVS Electronic Co. and released in 1998. It is an unofficial 16-bit adaptation of the Sony PlayStation game Dragon Ball GT: Final Bout, developed for the SNES and Sega Mega Drive/Genesis by an unknown developer.
Although it takes its name and several of its introductory and presentation elements from the PlayStation game, Dragon Ball Z: Final Bout is fundamentally a different game. Rather than using the PlayStation game's 3D fighting system, it is a traditional 2D fighting game featuring eight playable Dragon Ball characters.
The game's character sprites are heavily based on or ripped from the Dragon Ball Z: Super Butōden games, while character voices are taken from Dragon Ball Z: Hyper Dimension. The SNES version also uses music and sound effects from Street Fighter II.
A closely related version was released for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis under the title Dragon Ball: Final Bout. The two versions share the same general concept and eight-character roster, but have differences in their audio and other technical details. The SNES version was distributed exclusively in South America, while the Mega Drive version received wider distribution and several later pirate reissues.
Dragon Ball Z: Final Bout is notable as an unusual unlicensed Dragon Ball fighting game from the 1990s, combining the Final Bout branding with recycled Dragon Ball sprites, voices, music, and other assets from several different games.
