Star Wraith 2

Star Wraith 2 is the second instalment in the Star Wraith series of space combat simulation games. In addition to the single-player campaign mode featured in the previous game, Star Wraith 2 introduced the mercenary mode where the player acts as a space pilot for hire and must do various contract jobs to earn a living. Both the campaign and the mercenary mode offer a wide variety of mission types and combat environments, including asteroid fields, nebula clouds and planetary atmospheres. Star Wraith 2 does not support multiplayer games.

The campaign is set during a conflict between two human factions, the Alliance and the Federation. The player assumes the role of an Alliance pilot assigned to the Special Operations Wing. Operating from the Lexington class carrier in the Alpha Centauri system, the player must lead a squadron of Alliance fighters in a variety of covert missions against Federation forces. As a squadron commander, the player is given free control over the selection of ship types and armament to be used in each mission.

In the mercenary mode, the player has a choice of contract missions to be completed, and the money awarded for successful jobs is spent on ship maintenance and upgrades, because mercenary fighters are somewhat inferior to the military technology available in the campaign mode. Like in the campaign mode, the player may command a squadron, however in the mercenary mode wingmen must be hired and paid wages to be kept in the squadron.

The third single-player mode is instant action, which allows to fly a mission unrelated to any storyline. There are three types of instant action: freeflight just pits the player against waves of enemy fighters, without any mission objectives; random generates a mission using random parameters (such as mission goals, environment, enemy ship types); and the third option is to create a mission using parameters specified by the player. Pilot and squadron statistics are not recorded in the instant action mode.
