Overview
Side Fighter is a fixed-screen shooter where players control two vertical-moving spacecraft positioned along the left and right edges of the screen. The game features both dual and independent control modes, allowing either synchronized or separate movement of the ships.
Players navigate the ships vertically to avoid enemy attacks and fire at approaching waves of enemies using laser weapons. The screen remains static while enemies appear in formations and patterns. A visible energy meter at the top of the screen tracks the power level for both ships; if it depletes, the ships are destroyed. Players start with three lives and can earn an extra ship after completing the eighth and fifteenth zones.
The game includes time-based bonuses awarded at the end of each wave, and zone bonuses based on the starting level. Players must also avoid indestructible bombs that bounce between the side walls before self-destructing.
