Overview
Candle Knight is a 2.5D action platformer. This means that the gameplay is sideways in two dimensions, but the use of perspectives and various gameplay elements are in 3D, although, as I said, the game is played in a classic way, even though it appears to be in 3D at those moments.
That charm I mentioned begins with its protagonist and the world he'll navigate on his adventure. An intro simulating beautiful watercolor scenes presents a cryptic plot from which we're not quite sure what to expect. Its dark setting and details remind us of the Souls saga, but within a few seconds, accompanied by beautiful music, we see that the possible similarities lie elsewhere.
Our protagonist is a small knight with a flame on his head. This is important because fire will be vital both in this confusing plot and background, and, above all, in the gameplay. We are tiny beings, who meet more tiny beings during our adventure, fighting against tiny beings. But we'll be moving through a castle where tables, chairs, bookcases, and so on are all "human" sized. What kind of microcosm is there here, and what underpins it? As I've said, the great work on setting and creating the background speaks volumes more than the story itself. It reminds me of the legendary Clockwork Knight for the Sega Saturn, in a darker way, more than Little Nightmares, for example.
