Satan's Challenge

Satan’s Challenge is a horror-themed text adventure about confronting occult forces threatening those closest to you. Also released under the title Nevil Rides Out, the game begins as the player arrives at a remote hamlet where dark powers are concentrated. A supernatural ceremony must be performed to summon and safely confront Lucifer, involving a ritual pentagram and specific items such as holy water, candles, and horseshoes.

The player assumes the role of a lone figure determined to halt a growing supernatural threat. After learning that loved ones are in danger, the protagonist travels to a deserted village where malevolent forces have gathered. The only way to stop the evil is to summon Lucifer using a partially understood magical rite. The final confrontation can only occur safely if the correct elements are assembled and the ritual completed. As the game begins, environmental obstacles—such as a flood cutting off escape—already suggest that the opposing forces are actively working to stop you.

Players input typed commands using a standard verb–noun parser (e.g., “GO NORTH”, “USE CANDLE”). The adventure consists of exploring locations, examining items, and piecing together the required steps of the ritual while avoiding or overcoming supernatural threats. Navigation and object usage are critical, and hints are conveyed through environmental text.
