Overview
TECNO - the Base is a futuristic first-person shooter with adventure elements, reminiscent of the System Shock games. It was almost entirely created by Paolo Cosentino from Uruguay using the Blitz3D engine.
It tells the story of Alexia and Mika Rietvell who work in a large base. After an accident in the Hydra-Mixing Lab, all robots suddenly become hostile and attack the humans. In different missions, both characters can be played in turns. Despite the first-person shooter premise, the game consists of a large amount of complex and sophisticated puzzles that require items, remote controls and the operation of machines and computers in the environment. Next to item manipulation, files often need to be scanned for codes, often with temporary or time-limited effects, and there are physics-based puzzles. As such, it is more of a hardcore intellectual exercise than a straightforward shooter.
Using different weapons such as machine guns, sniper rifles, grenade launchers and laser accelerators, enemies need to be destroyed, but even then the different parts will often continue to attack. Generally, enemies tend to respawn when revisiting areas, but the same goes for health, ammo or other items available such as EMP blasts, night vision, oxygen masks or smoke grenades. From the inventory, different items can be selected or examined and there is a general map where important locations are highlighted. There are often many objectives at once and puzzles do not always need to be solved in a specific order.
Over the course of the game, certain boss characters appear and the player is also able to drive a NeoExplorer Tank and a mech-like Cylzu T-40.
