PlayStation Doom: Master Edition

Overview

PlayStation Doom: Master Edition is a hack created by Team GEC and a team of about a dozen mappers (José Navarrete (CoTeCiO), Dark Pulse, DeXiaZ, Dragonsbrethren, DynamiteKaitorn, Chris Harriman (Impboy), marver0PS, mr-around, riderr3, Saint_Guy, and Uroboros87) from the Doomworld community, aiming to backport all cut Ultimate Doom, Doom II, Final Doom, and Master Levels maps, as well as add in No Rest for the Living, Xbox Doom's added maps, custom maps by John Romero, and Tom Mustaine's Doom2 Map14 Homage into PlayStation Doom and Final Doom.

Unlike the PlayStation Doom TC, this modification creates a hacked and modified version of the original game, and runs on the actual PlayStation hardware (along with emulators). The ultimate aim is to have versions of all official maps, along with some custom maps by notable creators, given various technical limitations of PlayStation Doom (for example, some introduced maps still need to be simplified).

Upon loading the hack, after a few introductory FMVs, the player is presented with a new menu which allows for the player to select a set of levels to load. As of Beta 4, these selections are as follows:

Doom: contains (Ultimate) Doom, Romero's other maps, and the Xbox maps

SIGIL

Doom II

No Rest for the Living

Master: contains the Master Levels, as well as various custom PWADs from Master Level authors, such as Sverre Kvernmo's Cabal series, Dr. Sleep's Crossing Acheron, etc.

TNT: contains TNT: Evilution

Plutonia: contains The Plutonia Experiment

The chosen set of levels is then loaded. Everything besides the original Doom episode uses the PlayStation Final Doom engine; the original Doom episode uses the original PlayStation Doom engine (and its reduced limits).

The hack also contains some quality-of-life improvements; for example, restoring a Nightmare! difficulty which is similar to the PC version (except for a lack of respawning monsters), re-enabling a VRAM Viewer cheat code, some bugfixes related to switches and texture animations and Dualshock support.

Beta 1 was released on August 27, 2018, and Beta 2 was released on October 31 of that same year. Beta 3 was released on October 1, 2019.

The current version, as of November 16, 2022, is Beta 4, released on the same day. Besides a new set of maps, it also introduces missing monsters from PC version: Arch-vile, Wolfenstein SS, Commander Keen, Icon of Sin.
