Hobbit

Overview

Hobbit is a one-player strategy game in which the player assumes the role of a hobbit thief tasked with infiltrating a 9 × 9 grid castle in order to steal the Orb of Zot from an evil wizard’s stronghold. Along the way the player must locate a Runestaff (disguised as a demon) which enables teleportation, navigate through warp-points, collect gems and amulets, avoid or bribe demons, and utilise lamps and flares to identify nearby threats and items.

Gameplay occurs on a 9 by 9 grid representing the interior of the wizard’s castle. Movement is by cardinal directions (north, south, east, west) or other actions (such as wait, map, lamp, flare, teleport). The player begins without full knowledge of the layout; items like lamps and flares help reveal nearby rooms or their contents. Warp points can randomly teleport the player elsewhere, and one of them conceals the Orb of Zot — however to successfully acquire it the player must first obtain the Runestaff, which allows direct teleportation into the correct warp-room. Demons populate many rooms; the player may bribe them with gems or become immune via power-giving amulets, or kill them with amulets. A time limit exists in the sense the wizard’s arrival will end the game if the player doesn’t complete the objective in time.
