Der Kleine Hobbit

Overview

Der Kleine Hobbit ( The Little Hobbit) is a German-language text adventure (with simple graphics) that adapts the story of the book The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien. The player takes on the role of Bilbo Baggins who joins a group of dwarves led by Thorin Oakenshield and the wizard Gandalf on a quest to reclaim the dwarves’ treasure and defeat the dragon Smaug.

Gameplay occurs via a two-word parser where the player enters commands such as NIMM SCHATZ (“take treasure”) or GEHE OSTEN (“go east”). The game world is navigated via text descriptions of rooms/locations with accompanying simple character-graphics screens. There is no character creation: the player controls Bilbo, interacts with dwarves and other NPCs, solves puzzles and gathers items while avoiding traps and either battling or evading foes.
