Overview
Cronos: The New Dawn is a third-person survival horror game. It combines action, exploration, and puzzle-solving with time travel mechanics. The game is set in the Nowa Huta district of Kraków, presented through a blend of Eastern European brutalism and retro-futurist design. Its narrative alternates between a devastated future wasteland and the 1980s, during an event known as The Change that reshaped humanity.
Players assume the role of a Traveler employed by the Collective, an organization seeking to recover key individuals lost during the apocalypse. The protagonist searches ruined environments for temporal rifts leading to the past, using a device called the Harvester to extract Essences from the dead. Carrying these Essences enhances combat effectiveness but introduces hallucinatory side effects, reflecting a trade-off between power and mental stability.
Gameplay emphasizes careful resource management, tactical combat, and environmental puzzles. Ammunition and healing supplies are scarce, requiring methodical planning before engagements. Enemies, known as Orphans, are mutated remnants of humans. Defeated foes can "merge" with nearby corpses to become faster and stronger unless burned quickly, encouraging efficient battlefield cleanup. Larger variants and bosses demand heavy use of ammunition and explosives.
Exploration mixes combat arenas with puzzle segments. Temporal anomalies allow players to alter landscapes, reconstructing bridges, rooftops, or platforms to advance. Gravity boots expand traversal by enabling wall- and ceiling-walking across fractured terrain.
