Overview
Goodbye Universe is a narrative adventure game. It builds upon the emotional storytelling and experimental control schemes of Before Your Eyes, a title most developers were previously involved with, using first-person interaction to explore memory, time, and family relationships. Players inhabit the perspective of Isaac, a six-month-old baby who possesses telekinetic and telepathic abilities. The game’s story unfolds through his eyes and memories, blending everyday domestic life with supernatural elements.
The narrative centers on Isaac's family that consists of his parents, sister, and grandfather, and their complex emotional lives. As Isaac grows, he perceives their thoughts and feelings through his powers, offering insight into their struggles and hopes. The story is narrated by an adult Isaac reflecting on his childhood, while players relive key moments from infancy onward.
Gameplay revolves around simple physical and emotional interactions. Using regular controls or camera tracking through a webcam (Windows and Switch 2 only), players can manipulate the environment with actions such as closing cabinets, turning on lights, or cleaning up toys, but also by blinking, gesturing, closing eyes to rearrange scenes, frowning, or focusing their gaze. Isaac's telepathic ability allows players to "listen" to the thoughts of others, often portrayed as layered audio collages that convey character moods and inner conflicts. This can also be done by closing you eyes and tilting your head to tune in to a signal.
While most of the game is slow-paced and contemplative, certain moments incorporate more traditional gameplay sequences such as timed gestures or reflex-based telekinetic actions.
