Journey To Mt. Doom

Overview

Journey To Mt. Doom is a disk based graphical adventure game, written for the most part in Extended BASIC (an ML routine is used to draw the text). Using PMODE 3 (128x192x4) color graphics (and switching between color sets depending on which area of the game you are in), the game has a mostly static plot but there are a few random elements (including when creatures appear) so it won't always play exactly the same. Unfortunately there is no save game feature, which is a little odd since it requires a disk drive to play and thus it would have been easy to support this feature.

The plot of the game is loosely based on the Lord of the Rings novels by J.R.R. Tolkien, in that the players mission is to find a magic ring, travel to Mount Doom to destroy it, and finally return to the location that the player started the game at. This is all done to prevent a necromancer from waging war. There is a score (based on destroying the ring or not as well as treasures collected by the player) which can go negative. The game is played like most text adventures: two word verb/noun commands, single letter directions to move, and the INVENTORY command. The graphics are fairly simple (and loaded directly off disk, versus being drawn each time) but represent the scenes fairly well.
