Varloc

Overview

Varloc is a chess-like strategy game with some similarities to Archon: The Light and the Dark. The game takes place on a board consisting of 64 squares where the player competes against a computer controlled evil wizard called Varloc. On each side there are sixteen warriors: a witch, a sorcerer's apprentice, a minotaur, two archers, two knights, four dwarfs and four trolls. Like in chess each warrior is only allowed certain moves. To win the game it is necessary to defeat the enemy's wizard. If the player manages to find a hidden gem, it is possible to kill Varloc with a single hit.

When two warriors clash on the board the game moves to a battlefield where the player has to defeat Varloc's warrior in a one-on-one duel. Unlike the battles of Archon, the game uses wireframe 3D graphics displayed from a first person perspective. Each warrior has its own way of attacking and defending. The minotaur rams into opponents while knights attack with a sword and can defend with a shield. Dwarfs can disappear at will while the wizard, the witch and the apprentice can shapeshift into three deadly animals: bat, snake or spider. The wizard can also turn into any of the other warriors.
