Overview
Alien River is a strategy game set on a desolate plain near the Pecos River, where an alien space vessel has crash-landed. Several surviving aliens are roaming the area surrounding the wreckage and are reported to be extremely hostile. The player is deployed near an abandoned settlement on the opposite side of the river with orders to reach the crash site and inspect the remains of the alien craft. The environment includes ruined buildings and a river separating the player’s starting position from the objective, shaping the danger and movement of both the player and the aliens.
The game is played on a top-down, grid-based map and proceeds in turns. Each time the player makes a move or performs an action, all aliens simultaneously advance one step toward the player’s current position. The objective is to reach the alien ship while avoiding direct contact with the pursuing aliens.
To slow or eliminate enemies, the player can place landmines on the terrain. Placing a mine consumes a turn, allowing the aliens to move closer, but detonates when an alien steps on it. The player begins with a limited supply of mines, with additional mines obtainable from a randomly placed crate on the map.
