AllegroHack

Overview

AllegroHack is a graphical roguelike game based on 1987 NetHack. The player assumes the role of an adventurer descending through a fantasy dungeon in search of the Amulet of Yendor. The dungeon is populated by monsters, items, traps, and magical effects, and progression requires surviving increasingly dangerous dungeon levels before returning to the surface with the amulet. The narrative structure and setting follow those of NetHack without modification.

Gameplay in AllegroHack follows the turn-based dungeon exploration mechanics of NetHack. The player moves through randomly generated dungeon levels, engaging in combat with monsters, collecting and identifying items, managing hunger and status effects, and interacting with environmental features such as doors, traps, and altars. Character progression is influenced by race, role, alignment, and equipment choices.

AllegroHack replaces the traditional ASCII display with a graphical tile-based interface rendered using the Allegro library. Dungeon elements, monsters, and items are represented by large color graphics, while the underlying rules, systems, and interactions remain unchanged from NetHack.
