Overview
A slightly strange product from a small Taiwanese developer Jack Bean Studio. This studio is known for its very good RPG games that have been released since 1993. But, apparently, in 1995, the creative forces of this team of developers sharply declined. As a result, judging by the intro, we see a clear swing at another good RPG, and in the gameplay we see... Banal Tetris, albeit with a few advanced innovations...
The plot of Tetris is something that only Taiwanese developers are capable of! Well, they clearly conceived an RPG, but something didn't work out for them, and they were just too lazy to remove the story opening animation. It was like this. In one Happy Kingdom (快樂王國), there was a princess (公主). One night during the full moon, she was attracted by the beautiful reflections of the moon on the surface of the royal pool, and she came up to take a closer look... The princess was never seen again, except for frozen puddles of water, one of which was imprinted with hieroglyphs that read about the Ice Queen of the North Country (北國 冰雪女王). The old king was grief-stricken, but he couldn't save his daughter because the forces against the Ice Queen were too unequal. Things changed when a little boy, Xiao Ke (小克), appeared. The king called him specifically so that he could help find a secret weapon on the old map: a powerful bow and arrows, as well as cannonballs filled with magical powers. And so, little Xiao Ke set off... How does this relate to Tetris? – try to think it out yourself.
The passage of the logical game, dressed in the plot outline of an RPG, is as follows. You will complete Tetris levels, and in the story, each of your victories will mean either getting some target items or defeating the Ice Queen. At the end of the gameplay, Xiao Ke and the princess riding a war gorilla (?!) will break into the evil queen's palace and win, and so will you. This is such an unusual course of gameplay.
Tetris is quite unusual. Here, in addition to the passive elements of the "blocks", there are elements of the "food" and "devourer" types. Food, depending on the design of the level, can be represented by berries, carrots, frogs, mice. And the devourer, accordingly, will be a snail, a rabbit, a red ball with an arrow, a cat. The soul of the eaten creature is comically depicted rising with the help of wings upwards – i.e. to paradise. When the blocks line up in one horizontal line with no voids, the line disappears, which is in line with the basic concept of Tetris. There are even exploding objects. Food falling from above constantly tends to get clogged between the blocks. Rarely does a devourer fall with food or blocks, and then wherever he manages to run, the food will be eaten, and the blocks will fall and rarely even line up in horizontal lines. It is impossible for the devourer not to eat someone, then he simply breaks.
The user is additionally given the opportunity to play together, and you can also choose one of 99 levels at once, there is an editor of your levels, there is a tutorial demonstration... Yes, yes, even in Tetris, the user must be taught all the "secrets" of control in the game. Rotate falling objects – space, move – arrows. That's all the management! The graphics have a resolution of 320x200, but it looks a little dirty. The backgrounds are no longer fully drawn, but partially photographic.
Well, in terms of its Tetris properties, the game is still worth mentioning. But a sharp change in the genre directionAnd even with such a plot "bummer" after the intro - for an RPG lover this will leave an unpleasant aftertaste in the soul. There is not much Chinese in the interface, and it will definitely not interfere with you in the gameplay. Yes, sooner or later, creative forces run out, and it is better for a real professional to leave the stage on time, before this unpleasant moment comes. The developer Jack Bean Studio, after the game described here, released in 1996 another, his last creation in the action genre - Little Monk, and it is also presented on our site.
