Battleship (1991)

Overview

Battleship is a digital version of the board game played on a 19 by 15 cell grid, totaling 285 possible strike coordinates. The player and the computer each deploy a fleet of eight vessels of varying dimensions: the largest is a 5x2 aircraft carrier, while the smallest are spy ships and patrol boats occupying two cells each. Before active combat begins, each side places eight sea mines. If a ship is deployed on a cell containing an enemy mine, a hit is registered immediately, and the ship's position is revealed to the opponent.

During the combat phase, players take turns firing shots based on a salvo mechanic; the number of shots allowed per turn is equal to the number of enemy ships currently sunk. This targeting is interrupted if a shot strikes a mine, which immediately terminates the current turn and yields control to the opponent. Upon the destruction of a fleet, the game calculates a performance score derived from the total shots taken, hit accuracy, and the number of surplus shots remaining after the final hit.
